At Tree Top Flyer Tree Service, safety always comes first—especially when trees begin to show signs of failure near homes, driveways, and other high-risk areas. In a recent project, our team was called to a home in Chapel Hill where two trees had become serious hazards: a large dead oak leaning toward the home and a codominant maple with structural weakness that put nearby vehicles and the house at risk. This is exactly the kind of situation where proactive tree removal can prevent major property damage—or even injury.
Removing a Large Dead Oak Leaning Toward the Home
The first priority on this job was a large dead oak tree that had begun leaning toward the house.
Dead trees are unpredictable. As they deteriorate, their structural integrity weakens, making them more likely to fail without warning—especially during storms or high winds.
Because of its size and proximity to the home, careful sectional tree removal was required. Each cut was planned to safely bring the tree down in controlled sections, minimizing risk to the structure and surrounding landscape.
Once the tree was fully removed, the area was cleared and prepared for stump grinding.
Addressing a Hazardous Codominant Maple Tree
The second concern on the property was a codominant maple tree—also known as a double-trunk tree.
In this case, the two main stems had grown together but were structurally weak at the union point. This type of growth pattern is known to create a high-risk failure zone, where one or both trunks can split under pressure from wind, rain, or seasonal stress.
Because this tree was located near both the home and driveway, a failure could have caused significant damage to vehicles or the structure itself. Given the risk, full removal was the safest long-term solution.
Stump Grinding for a Clean Finish
After both trees were safely removed, our crew completed stump grinding to eliminate remaining root bases.
Stump grinding is an important final step because it:
- Prevents regrowth from weak or damaged root systems
- Removes tripping hazards from the yard
- Improves the appearance and usability of the landscape
- Prepares the area for future planting or lawn restoration
The result is a clean, safe, and usable space where hazardous trees once stood.
Why Early Tree Assessment Matters
This project is a great example of how important regular tree inspections can be. Many tree hazards develop slowly over time and are not always obvious until the risk becomes serious.
Signs like:
- Dead or declining trees
- Leaning trunks
- Cracks or splits in major branches
- Codominant stems with weak attachments
can all indicate that removal may be necessary to protect your home and property.
