Challenging Dead White Oak Removal in Chapel Hill, NC

Arborist carefully removes the upper sections of a massive dead white oak tree near a home in Chapel Hill, NC using professional climbing and rigging techniques.

When it comes to tree removal, not every project is straightforward. Some jobs require more than the right equipment—they demand careful planning, patience, and years of experience. Recently, the Tree Top Flyer Tree Service team completed one of those memorable projects: removing a massive dead white oak from a residential property in Chapel Hill, NC.

This wasn’t just another tree removal. It was a two-day project that required precision from start to finish.

A Massive Dead White Oak

Although the photos don’t fully capture the scale of the tree, this white oak was enormous. The stump measured at least 4 feet across at the base. Dead trees of this size become increasingly hazardous over time, especially when they’re located close to homes and surrounded by valuable landscaping. Unfortunately, this beautiful white oak had died several months earlier, leaving the homeowners with the difficult decision to have it removed.

Protecting What Mattered Most

One of the biggest challenges wasn’t removing the tree—it was protecting everything around it.

The homeowners treasure the mature trees throughout their property, and there was a healthy maple tree growing directly beneath much of the white oak’s canopy. Damaging that tree simply wasn’t an option.

To safely remove the limbs above the maple, we built a custom zip-line rigging system, allowing us to guide large branches over the maple and safely lower them to the ground.

On the house side, the obstacles continued.

We carefully worked around:

  • A mature maple tree
  • Azaleas and rhododendrons
  • A deer fence
  • The home’s roof, with several large limbs extending over it

Every branch on that side of the tree had to be individually rigged and lowered by rope to prevent damage.

Precision All the Way to the Ground

Once the canopy was removed, the trunk still presented one final challenge.

There was only a tiny opening between two maple trees, a fence post, and existing landscaping where the remaining trunk could safely fall.

With virtually no room for error, our team carefully calculated the fall path and successfully laid the remaining spar exactly where it needed to go. It’s one of those moments that reminds us why experience matters on complex removals.
